It was announced on February 21st, 2023 that the 13th edition of the African Games have been postponed to 2024.
The festival which serves as an Olympic-style tournament for African nations was scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana from August 4th - 19th of this year. The event organizers have cited delays in the construction of facilities as the hold up and will announce a new date for the games in the near future.
Flashback to the latest African Games were held in Rabat, Morocco in 2019, Nigeria topped the medal table in Athletics with 10 Gold medals and 23 medals in total. Gold medalists included Tobi Amusan, Chioma Onyekwere, and Chukwuebuka Enekwechi who all set Games records in the Women's 100m hurdles, Women's Discus, and Men's Shotput respectively. Ese Brume, Raymond Ekevwo, Sade Olatoye, Grace Anigbata, and Kelechi Nwanaga also won individual gold medals for Nigeria along with with the Women's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
With this Area Championship being moved to 2024, this now leaves the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary as the sole international championship for African senior athletes this season. This also means that 2024 will be packed with events, as the African Games will be included on the calendar with the African Athletics Championships in Cameroon and the 2024 Paris Olympics in France.
