In the Men’s 60m, Nigeria’s fastest man was Favour Ashe of Auburn University who ran 6.51s twice this season, most recently at the NCAA Indoor Championship on March 10th. This time is tied for the 8th fastest time in the world this season. On the women’s side, the fastest woman was Rosemary Chukwuma of Texas Tech University. Her new personal best of 7.09s was set on January 27th and is tied for the 12th fastest time in the world this season.
In the Men’s 200m, Nigeria’s the fastest time belonged to Udodi Onwuzurike of Stanford University who ran a new personal best of 20.17s at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 10th. This mark stands as the 4th fastest men’s indoor 200m mark in the world in 2023. Favour Ofili of LSU rewrote the indoor Women’s 200m African record on that day as well to further solidify her top spot on the Nigerian charts this season. Her time of 22.11s is the 2nd fastest time in the world this season.
Ezekiel Nathaniel of Baylor University led the way for the Men’s Indoor 400m rankings with a time of 45.69s. This personal best also set at the NCAA Indoor Championships helped him earn NCAA 1st Team All-American honors and is the 15th fastest time in the world. Imaobong Nse Uko who also attends Baylor was the fastest woman in the indoor 400m event. Her time of 52.19s was set on February 25th and is new African U20 record.
In the 60m hurdles, Miracle Thompson of Cloud City Community College ran Nigeria’s fastest time on the woman’s time of 8.25s on March 4th. It was the fastest time in the NJCAA this season and helped her secure Athlete of the Year honors in her region. Bashiru Abdillahi of the University of Texas – San Antonio ran the fastest time of the Nigerian men in the 60m hurdles. He achieved this on March 3rd tying his personal best of 7.77s.
In the Women’s Jump events, Ruth Usoro led the way in both Long Jump and Triple Jump. Her top long jump of 6.87m was a personal best and a World Championship qualifier in Budapest later this year. It was also the 12th farthest long jump in the world during the indoor season. In the triple jump, she jump 14.09m which is the 18th farthest jump in the world this season. Esther Isa of Middle Tennessee State University had the top mark in the indoor High Jump with a jump of 1.84m.
In the Men’s Jump events, Best Erhire of Texas Tech University was the best triple jumper and high jumper with marks of 16.01m and 2.23m. Joseph Oreva of West Texas A&M University was Nigeria’s top men’s indoor long jumper with a personal best of 7.74m.
In the throwing events, Sade Olatoye was the top women’s weight throw with a personal best and new Nigerian record of 25.32m. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi was the top men’s shot putter throwing a personal best 21.20m. Princess Kara of Indiana Wesleyan University was Nigeria’s top female shot putter throwing 15.25m. Vincent Ugwoke of Cloud City Community College had the farthest men’s weight throw of 17.73m.
